Turkish Military Attacks in Kurdistan Surge 78% in April Despite PKK Ceasefire
The CPT, which closely monitors the Turkish-PKK conflict in the Kurdistan Region, reported a sharp increase in Turkish military attacks in April—up 78% compared to March. The Turkish army conducted 210 attacks and bombardments on the Kurdistan Region during April, with 92% of them concentrated along the borders of Duhok Governorate.
This surge came despite the PKK’s unilateral ceasefire in March, following a peace call by Abdullah Öcalan. While Turkish attacks had declined in March, they escalated significantly in April, returning to pre-ceasefire levels.
Since April 1, at least 210 Turkish military operations have been recorded in the region, including 42 airstrikes, 153 artillery bombardments, and 14 helicopter attacks. One additional attack involved light weapons, damaging a civilian home. In total, three civilian houses were completely destroyed and two others damaged due to Turkish operations in April.
Duhok Governorate bore the brunt of these attacks, accounting for approximately 92% of all incidents. A total of 198 attacks in Duhok were carried out using artillery and helicopters. In contrast, only 12 attacks—just 8% of the total—were recorded along the Erbil Governorate border.
The increase was especially concentrated in the Amedi district, where 92% of April’s attacks occurred. The highest number of attacks in a single day this year was 53, targeting villages near Mount Gara in Amedi.
Since the beginning of 2025, at least 616 bombardments and helicopter attacks have been recorded in the Kurdistan Region. Turkish military operations have killed three civilians and injured six others. Meanwhile, the PKK has launched at least five attacks on Turkish military bases on Mount Matina, and two attacks on a recently established Peshmerga base at the peak of Gre Dava, south of Balava village in Amedi, resulting in injuries to four Peshmerga fighters.
